Convert WPS equations to MathType: types, compatibility and checks

Conversion depends on the equation object, WPS and MathType versions, and the conversion command actually available in the integration. In a supported, configured Windows environment, test MathType → Convert Equations → OMML source → MathType equations in a copy before processing the whole document. An ordinary equation screenshot has no OMML structure for this command to convert.

This page combines current vendor references, downloadable Doc2X output samples and the original 2024 WPS setup record. The seven legacy files are not universal prerequisites for every new version.

Identify the equation first

A .docx extension does not identify its equations. One file may mix OMML, MathType objects and pictures, which need separate checks. For the Word-specific procedure, see Word OMML to MathType.

Choose the current integration

Checked on October 9, 2026: WIRIS lists MathType for Windows separately from MathType Add-in for Microsoft 365. Its Windows route includes WPS; the Microsoft 365 add-in is not interchangeable with a WPS integration. Check the official download page for the appropriate product and licence conditions.

The official release notes record automatic WPS Writer detection in Windows v7.7 and WPS 64-bit compatibility in v7.11.1.462; the list also includes v7.12.3 from September 2026. Check your versions and architecture against the current vendor instructions. Integration support does not guarantee lossless conversion of every equation.

The historical screenshots below came from WPS 12.1.0.19302 and Windows 10 22H2, recorded on December 26, 2024. We have not reinstalled every Windows/WPS combination in this review, so the old manual setup is not presented as a current universal procedure.

Test a selection before converting the document

1. Save a document copy and select representative fractions, scripts or matrices.
2. Confirm that WPS exposes the installed integration's MathType → Convert Equations command. If it does not, check the product route and installation first.
3. Where the dialog supports this conversion, choose the matching OMML source and MathType equations target. Test the selection before choosing an available whole-document scope.
4. Review the conversion count, open a representative equation and change a symbol to check editing in the target environment.
5. Compare matrix dimensions, scripts, root extents, numbering and surrounding text before replacing the working file.

A zero count calls for checking the selection and original objects. A success message does not prove that every native equation or picture was converted. File export and client clipboard copying are separate workflows with their own software and entitlement conditions.

Compare actual downloadable objects

These are existing Doc2X exports of the public, authored “Functions and Rates of Change” sample. Their file structures were downloaded and checked again on October 9, 2026:

Both previews were rendered from the corresponding DOCX in LibreOffice. Their similar appearance does not identify their equation objects. They are not screenshots of a current WPS/MathType installation.

These files compare direct export object types. They are not a before/after experiment converting the WPS file with a plugin in this review. Structural inspection does not replace editing in your own WPS/MathType environment. See the sample provenance.

Finding PNG files inside a DOCX does not by itself prove that equation data was lost. The new object and preview comparison includes two native downloads from the same source and a deliberately constructed image-only copy. Use it to distinguish document structure from editing support in the target application.

Questions about the current workflow

Must I install the four VBA components in the old record?

They are not universal requirements for every version. Check the current Windows installer, WPS version and vendor support conditions first. The old file list is retained only for its specific recorded environment. Handle installation or macro prompts according to the actual file source and software instructions.

Can I convert every WPS equation at once?

Batch conversion requires supported objects, an applicable plugin and the correct scope. Back up and test a small selection first. Ordinary pictures, other embedded objects and unsupported equations are not guaranteed to convert.

Can I export from Doc2X without installing MathType first?

For supported parsed results, check the current Word MathType export and task entitlement. This does not rewrite every object in an arbitrary existing WPS document. Editing downloaded MathType objects still requires a suitable environment. See Word, WPS and export format selection.

Why can I see an equation but not edit it in MathType?

Identify whether it is a picture or another native equation type, then check the target software and integration. Similar appearance does not establish the object type. Try editing one of the fixed samples above to distinguish the file from the environment.

The original screenshots, paths and anchors below remain available to readers using that specific environment. They are not the recommended installation sequence for every current version. Start a new setup from the current vendor references above.

MathType Plugin Installation Process

Step 1: Download Required Files

The historical setup used these seven files. They are retained for that environment; start a new setup from the current official installer:

Step 2: Install VBA to Enable WPS Macro Support

Install in the following order:

Install 1_vcredist_x86.exe:

1. Double-click to run the installer
2. An installation wizard will appear
3. Check "I have read and accept the license terms"
4. Click "Install" to complete installation

Install Other VBA Components:

• Double-click to run 2_Vba71.msi, 3_Vba71_1033.msi, 4_Vba71_2052.msi
• These software installations only show brief popup windows and require no additional operations

Verify VBA Installation

After installation, open WPS and check the Tools menu bar:

• "Run Macro" option should be available (enabled state)
• "Macro Security" option should be available (enabled state)

Step 3: Install MathType Plugin

Steps:

1. Open WPS installation directory
2. Copy OMML2MML.XSL and MathPage.wll to the above directory

Note:

• If you changed the installation directory when installing WPS, please adjust the path accordingly
• AppData folder is a hidden folder; you can directly enter the full path in the address bar

1. Open another WPS directory (this directory is fixed)
2. Copy MathPage.wll and MathType Commands 2016.dotm to this directory

Step 4: Verify MathType Plugin Installation

1. Restart WPS
2. Check MathType Tab:
   • A "MathType" tab should appear after opening WPS
   • All function buttons in the tab should be clickable
   • If all functions are available, the installation is complete

Convert Formulas with MathType Plugin

Execute Conversion

1. Open WPS document containing OMML formulas

2. Click the MathType tab

3. Click "Convert Formulas" button

1. Select OMML formulas in the popup window
   • Select "OMML Formulas" option
   • Click "Convert" button

1. Wait for conversion to complete
   • The plugin attempts to process applicable OMML equations in the selected scope; review its count and output
   • A confirmation window will appear when conversion is complete

Conversion Complete

The conversion process from OMML formulas to MathType formulas is now complete.

Important Notes

Installation Requirements

• If using the historical VBA setup, follow that recorded environment; use current official installation instructions for new versions
• MathType requires a legitimate license for full functionality
• Close WPS and other Office programs during installation

System Compatibility

• This tutorial is tested on Windows 10 system
• Different versions of WPS may have directory differences
• It's recommended to use newer versions of WPS for better compatibility

File Paths

• Pay attention to the two different installation directories
• AppData is a hidden folder; you need to show hidden files or enter the path directly
• If you can't find the corresponding directory, search for key folder names

Troubleshooting

Q: No macro functionality in WPS after VBA installation?

A:

1. Ensure all 4 VBA components were installed in order
2. Restart WPS Office
3. Check if your WPS version supports macro functionality

Q: MathType tab doesn't appear?

A:

1. Confirm files were copied to the correct directories
2. Restart WPS
3. Review the system message and official file source; contact vendor support if needed

Q: Error message when converting formulas?

A:

1. Ensure MathType is properly installed and activated
2. Check compatibility between WPS version and MathType version
3. Try reinstalling plugin files

Q: Can't find the specified installation directory?

A:

1. Enter key folder names in Windows search
2. Check if WPS was installed to a custom path
3. You can view installation information through WPS Help menu
